Yes go! Well worth a visit. Beautiful simplicity. Also good actors often do speeches in the garden. The video show at entrance is good too
On arrival the hotel looked stunning and the staff most welcoming. Then we had the trek to our room - this was at the furthest end of the hotel in what has obviously been added on. The room, although clean, was a bit battered, but for just a two night stay would be okay. Breakfast, once again the staff were lovely but we had to wait 20 minutes for a table as there seemed to be no organisation, tables not cleared and staff all over the place. I don't know whether I would stay here again and I have to say that charging to stay in the car park is totally unacceptable!
Well set up exhibition on way into the house and garden. Staff in costume in most of the main rooms. They told you lots about the furniture and decor with many interesting anecdotes.Main bedroom still has original oak floorboards.
The house is relatively simple, but for the late 16th century it would have been considered quite a substantial dwelling. John Shakespeare, William's father, was a glove maker and wool dealer, and the house was originally divided in two parts to allow him to carry out his business from the same premises.The plan of the building was originally a simple rectangle. From north-west to south-east, the ground-floor consisted of a parlour with fireplace, an adjoining hall with a large open hearth, a cross passage, and finally a room which probably served as John Shakespeare's workshop.
